1961 Bentley Continental S-2 Park Ward
Mulliner Drop Head Coupe $350,000
Mulliner Drop Head Coupe $350,000
The Bentley S series represents the last of the coach-built cars, and while most examples featured the standard steel saloon bodies, a few were built with Mulliner Park Ward Continental bodywork in light alloy. The lighter weight and reduced frontal area permitted higher speeds, and the brakes were upgraded with an unusual four-shoe arrangement on the front wheels. These cars are part of the legendary Continental line, and the second series cars combined the mechanical refinement of the later cars (including the recently introduced aluminum 6.2 litre V8), with the more coherent styling of the earlier cars. Thanks to their well-proportioned and comparatively modern bodies, and motivated by the new V8 engine, these cars were meant for owner-drivers, and not the more insular owners of the Rolls-Royce cousins who were used to being driven instead.
This extremely rare 1961 Bentley Continental Coupe S-2 Park Ward Mulliner Drophead has been meticulously restored to its original color of Raven Black with Tan leather hides and tan carpeting, along with being fitted with a period correct “Hartz Stay Fast” black vinyl convertible top. The frame-off restoration was done at a cost of well over $150,000 including its bare metal repaint, engine and transmission rebuilds, complete brake system and fuel system rebuild, new stainless steel exhaust system, as well as its complete new interior and convertible top. It also benefits from power steering and power antenna complete with its upgraded McIntosh stereo system hidden in the glove compartment so as not to compromise the integrity of the originality of the car. The correct "His Master's Voice" radio is properly installed for concour correctness.
Park Ward was solely responsible for the Continental Drop Head coupe. The result, design 991, was exceptionally modern and quite striking. This example was one of only approximately 125 LHD units ever built and is a multiple Concour winner!
